According to the FAA, every year, there are more than 16,405,000 flights in the United States. At peak operational times, there are some 5,400 planes in the air at once. To keep this system working, and passengers and personnel safe, airports must be carefully maintained and runways, ramps, aprons and taxiways efficiently and quickly cleared of debris.

Sweeping applications fall into three general areas:

• General maintenance around roads, gate areas and the tarmac – material often found includes gravel, sand, small debris, and litter
• Runways require high-speed sweeping of foreign object debris that can include pea gravel, sand, small metal object and vegetation
• The runoff of glycol used as a deicing fluid on airplanes has to be cleaned up before it can flow into storm drain systems and pollute local waterways
